{"id":83368,"date":"2024-11-12T21:54:16","date_gmt":"2024-11-12T16:24:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.khushalekashmir.com\/?p=83368"},"modified":"2024-11-12T21:54:16","modified_gmt":"2024-11-12T16:24:16","slug":"indus-water-treaty-creating-hurdles-in-jks-potential-hydel-power-generation-cm-omar-abdullah","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.khushalekashmir.com\/index.php\/2024\/11\/12\/indus-water-treaty-creating-hurdles-in-jks-potential-hydel-power-generation-cm-omar-abdullah\/","title":{"rendered":"Indus Water Treaty creating hurdles in J&#038;K\u2019s potential hydel power generation: CM Omar Abdullah"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Calls for speedier implementation of RDSS works by Central PSUs, greater accountability<\/strong><br \/>\nNEW DELHI, NOVEMBER 12: Chief Minister, J&amp;K, Omar Abdullah, today highlighted the implications of Indus Water Treaty (IWT) on river-rich Jammu &amp; Kashmir, which restricts its ability to harness its huge hydel power potential primarily due to storage constraints.<br \/>\nAs a fallout of the treaty barriers, the Chief Minister said J&amp;K pays a heavy price in peak winter months when power generation hits low, creating hardships for its people.<br \/>\nThe Chief Minister, who also holds the charge of Power portfolio, was speaking during the Conference of Power Ministers of States &amp; UT, here today.<br \/>\nUnion Minister for Power, Manohar Lal, chaired the conference, which was also attended by Additional Chief Secretary to Chief Minister, Dheeraj Gupta, Principal Secretary Power, J&amp;K, H. Rajesh Prasad and MDs of J&amp;K Discoms as part of J&amp;K delegation.<br \/>\nMinister of State for Power, Shripad Yesso Naik, was also present in the Conference which was attended by Power Ministers and senior Government functionaries from all over the country.<br \/>\nSpeaking at the conference, Omar highlighted the limiting clauses in the Indus Water Treaty that restricts Jammu &amp; Kashmir from realising its full hydel potential by only permitting run-of-the-river projects.<br \/>\n\u201cHydel power is J&amp;K\u2019s only viable energy source. The region is compelled to rely on power imports from other States, which adversely impacts its economy.<br \/>\nTo address this, J&amp;K would require special compensation from the Government of India, including viability gap funding and equity assistance, to harness its untapped hydro-energy potential,\u201d he said, adding the support would not only help in meeting the region\u2019s energy needs but also contribute to national clean energy goals.<br \/>\nChief Minister also sought Centre\u2019s intervention in holding Central Public Sector Undertakings like PESL and National Thermal Power Corporation accountable in fast tracking loss reduction works under the premier Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme in J&amp;K.<br \/>\nThe Chief Minister also requested Power Ministry to consider gap funding for implementation of electric infra works under RDSS.<br \/>\nDuring the session on solar power potential and green energy, the Chief Minister dwelled upon the solar power energy being generated in Ladakh and said that J&amp;K would like to procure extra energy the UT is is able to generate.<br \/>\nEarlier, Omar Abdullah arrived here on Monday evening to participate in the Conference of Power Minister of States &amp; UTs at India International Convention &amp; Expo Centre Dwarka.<br \/>\nHe stayed for the entire day and participated in all technical sessions and put forth viewpoint of J&amp;K Government during the conference.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Calls for speedier implementation of RDSS works by Central PSUs, greater accountability NEW DELHI, NOVEMBER 12: Chief Minister, J&amp;K, Omar Abdullah, today highlighted the implications of Indus Water Treaty (IWT) on river-rich Jammu &amp; Kashmir, which restricts its ability to harness its huge hydel power potential primarily due to storage constraints.
